Rachel is a quiet and hard-working 7 year old girl who lives in the Mushunga Community Project Orphanage.
The only girl in a family of 8 children, Rachel was just two years old when her father committed suicide in 2018.
While Rachel’s father had left behind land, her mother was not able to manage it, and her eight children. Rachel’s grandparents drove her mother off the land, and sold the land, leaving Rachel’s mother with no possible way to make ends meet whilst raising her family.
While the boys in the family are able to make themselves useful and help their mother survive, Rachel was too young, and as a result, her mother approached the Mushunga Community Project in the hope that she could create a more stable and positive future for her daughter – which meant finding her an education.
Like so many of the children who join the project, Rachel’s life has changed completely. She now has a safe place to sleep, and food to eat, and she is able to go to school at Victorious Community School, enjoying the company of other children at the orphanage. Rachel dreams of becoming a nurse in the future. She is already nurturing her passion for caring by serving her community as a school health prefect.
Rachel's mum is so grateful for the work of the project:
I can’t thank the Mushunga project enough for what it is doing for Rachel and me. I no longer have to worry about my only girl because I know that the project is able to take care of her. It’s a relief to know that she has access to regular meals, good health care, and most importantly, an education that will help her to build a better life for herself and her own family when the time comes. The Mushunga Project is a gift from God.
