Agnes is finally flourishing, thanks to your support

Agnes’ story is similar to many of the other orphans here in Mushunga. It’s sad to say that she barely recognises the face of her father, who fled the village when the authorities were seeking his arrest for the rape of a young girl. Agnes has no recollection of her mother, who neglected her at birth, and we believe has subsequently died.

Agnes was among the first children to be in the care of Tonny – when the Mushunga Orphanage idea was just a dream in Tonny’s creative brain. Before we had the safety of a secure orphanage, it was difficult for Tonny to keep track of all the children who were informally in his care. Despite his best efforts, Agnes disappeared from Mushunga, and Tonny travelled to Kampala to free Agnes from her captors and bring her back to Mushunga.

Agnes is one of the older children in the care of the Mushunga project and has worked extremely hard this year, in secondary one. Her efforts have reaped rewards and her hard work in 2023 means that she will be starting secondary two, in 2024.

Agnes is a popular member of our community and loved by the other girls at the orphanage, who call her “sister”. It is joyful to witness the relationships that our children form with their “chosen” family.

In the care of the Mushunga Project, we have seen Agnes flourish. Despite her difficult start in life, in her new surroundings, with a supportive community, she has learned to smile again. She is a great entertainer, and she enjoys dancing for us when she comes home from school and spends time with us in the orphanage.

All of the children here in Mushunga are precious to Tonny – he is extremely happy to see Agnes growing and achieving her dreams.

At first, I was worried that maybe Agnes wouldn’t enjoy school. I tried to explain to her how it would change her life. I feel that God has answered our prayers because Agnes is a great student, and now aspires to make a positive impact and give back to the community who has raised her, with love. - Tonny , Mushunga Programme Director

If you would like to have a real impact on a life, sponsoring an orphan is a great way to do that. Visit our page to see some of the orphans that we are still seeking sponsorship for. If you are not in a position to make a monthly contribution, consider making a one off donation to our Christmas fund – that will ensure all of the children in our care receive a gift on Christmas day; or, to our lighting fund.

If you work for a company who budgets to support social causes, contact us today to discuss how you can support this life-changing project.
